Harry Garside says he finds it difficult to watch the interview that followed his stunning first round departure in the boxing competition at Paris 2024.
Post-fight Garside, who was viewed as a genuine gold medal shot after winning bronze in Tokyo, was heartbroken and was captured by the TV cameras hunched over and distraught out the back of the arena.
Speaking to Nine at the time, Garside admitted he felt like a failure and that he let Australia down, having exited the Paris Olympics in a manner that came as a complete shock.

“I’m sure the next month or two will be quite challenging, quite hard. I fear for my mind, it gets the better of me. I feel like I’ve let myself down and let Australia down mate, but what do you do?,” he said at the time.
In an interview for Nine’s Today Extra on Wednesday, Garside admitted his emotional first thoughts after crashing out were a tough watch.
“Yeah I can’t watch it. Yeah. I can’t watch it. I’ll try my best not to listen, but it’s hard not to, I don’t know, it’s just real. It’s raw, you know what it’s like sometimes you see pure vulnerability, right?,” Garside said.
“Like someone really just taking down that armour and just showing it. And I’ve been in spaces where someone’s done that in front of me, and it’s just… it’s real, it’s raw, it’s honest. It’s life. It’s human, and I yeah, I hate watching it because it is me.
“I like watching it with someone else. But I hate watching, you know, I think it’s really great to see, like, men who are tough guys like you at the top of their game, you know, show that vulnerability.”
Garside did not reveal what his plans are post Olympics, or whether he will enter the ring again as a professional.
